Lessons & Clinics

Chris and Caren Ruthven are available for colt starting, ground work, trailer loading and reining clinics, as well as riding lessons.  These can be customized to suit the needs of the individual/ group in order to achieve students’ personal goals and objectives. For reference however, below is an outline of popular themes for past lessons and clinics.

Baby Steps

Preschool for your young horse.  In this clinic, Chris provides you with the tools, skills and exercises to start your foals on the road to being a confident adult.  Get these building blocks in place and everything else just comes easy for them.  You will learn the skills necessary to teach your horse ground manners, be respectful, calm and trusting in your leadership, all in a way that is stress free and easily understandable for both you and your baby.

Get it right from the very start!

Foundation Building And Repair - Troubleshooting  Common Problems

Regardless of the age of the horse, the key to success is dependent on how strong its foundation training is.  Chris begins to build this foundation from the ground up, using the same techniques he would use in starting groundwork with foals.  In this way, he begins to rebuild the horses confidence and success in the learning process.

For the horse that has already been started, but still has issues, Chris aides the student in identifying holes in the horse's foundation, troubleshooting common problems, reading the horse and learning to react sooner to the more subtle signs the horse presents before they become a big issue.  Traditional horse training is very physical and typically addresses psychological issues with physical answers.  Chris stresses the importance of addressing psychological issues with psychological answers.

As Chris puts it, "If the software isn't right, the hardware doesn't work."

Frame For The Future - Taking The Next Step

Once a solid framework is in place, the horse is then prepared both mentally and physically to go in any direction with more advanced training in a specific discipline.

To do this Chris builds on what is presented in the Foundation Building And Repair theme, further developing and refining the students' communication skills, increasing rapport and respect between horse and human, and teaching the leadership skills necessary for building a strong framework for the future.  All advanced maneuvers are simply a combination of very basic tasks.  By identifying and breaking down the individual components of a maneuver students will learn how to effectively combine any components into more advanced level movements.

Along For The Ride - Developing Feel

Chris teaches the student how to let go in the saddle by riding with their seat rather than their reins.  By developing the riders' seat through learning to sit in the middle of the horse and using the hands for guiding rather than forcing a frame, the horse becomes softer and more responsive, and the rider becomes more confident, trusting the horse to take them for a ride rather than the rider taking the horse for a ride.

With traditional riding lessons, the student is often encouraged to bring the horses' face toward the body with the reins in order to achieve collection.  Chris teaches the student how to bring the horses' body to the face, achieving collection in more natural way and eliminating bracing issues.

Discipline-Specific Learning

Lessons and clinics are also available for those seeking training for specific disciplines – please call to discuss your individual needs.
